2018-19 NJ Internet Radio Awards!!!

It is time to announce New Jersey Internet Radio’s Award Winners for the 2018-19 school year. We look at the outstanding teams, games and players, that made 2018-19 such an amazing high school sports year in New Jersey.

GAME OF THE YEAR

In 2015 we added this category to acknowledge the favorite game we covered during the school year. This one we have to go back to October 12 when the Union Farmers traveled out to Hunterdon County to take on Central. Union won 28-10. That night Andrew Sanborn and Ahmirr Robinson lite up the night including a long pass play that was the turning point of the game. The reason we loved this one was simple, the way Union approached the task at hand. Union to Flemington is a long trip nevermind at 4pm. The farmers got off the bus, took care of business, got back on the bus in workman like fashion and went back to Union. No one was going to slow them down that night including Hunterdon Central.

TEAM OF THE YEAR

This school year, history was made. The Franklin Warriors Girls Basketball Team finished 34-0. No New Jersey High School Team in any sport ever won 34 games. The Warriors in 18/19 won everything. Somerset County, Section Title Group Title and the T.O.C. Championship. The T.O.C was not a cake walk at but the Warriors met every challenge.

Two other teams we want to mention. Piscataway’s football team finished 13-0 and the Manasquan Boy’s lacrosse team that posted a 21-1 record.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

This is always a tuff one. Each Sport is so different with different skills and different, ways a measuring greatness. It is said that the hardest thing to do is sports is hit a baseball where if you succeed 3 out of 10 times you’re a star. I’m sure if you asked a soccer goalie about defending a penalty kick and a point guard trailing by 1 point with 2 seconds left who is awarded two free throws which is harder to do. It is rare when you have such a clear choice in this category. Franklin’s Diamond Miller. Miller is just simply better than everyone else. 2000+ Points, Two-time Somerset County champion, Three-time North 2, Group 4 champion, Three-time Group 4 champion, Two-time Tournament of Champions winner, McDonald's All-American.

COACH OF THE YEAR

This one for us was the easiest to pick. Piscataway’s Dan Higgins guided is Chiefs to a perfect 13-0 record. Including a “Bowl Game” win over Ridgewood at MetLife Stadium in December. The Chiefs scored 30 or more point in 10 of the 13 games and pitched 5 shut outs including a stunning 26-0 road win over the 3 time defending champions Westfield Blue Devils on October 26th What a great season and a great leader.
