New Jersey Internet Radio is proud to announce its 2017-2018 year end awards. The winners were announced Thursday LIVE on the New Jersey High School Sports Round-Up which can be listened to anytime from the archive page at www.njir.net. “this is the ninth year we have given out awards, it’s always fun to go back and remember the great high school sports we witnessed” said Joe Nolan Founder of www.njir.net. The three categories are Game of the Year, Team of the Year and Athlete of the Year.
Game of the Year: This was easy. North Hunterdon’s win over Phillipsburg in the North Jersey Section 2 Group 4 Championship. In the first 90 seconds of the game we had 4 turnovers, during the game we saw a 99 yards scoring drive, a 94 yard run, an interception that wasn’t and a missed extra point. At the end of all the mayhem North pulled out a 21-20 win
Team of the Year: Again, this was an easy one. The Westfield High School Blue Devils football team. This team currently has a 37 game winning streak. Three time defending North Jersey Section 2 Group 5 Champs. The 2017 edition was not given much of a chance to pull off another undefeated season but by playing a smothering defense and just grinding it out on offence the Blue Devils were able to once again go 12-0. The school record unbeaten streak stands at 48 which was put together over 5 season from 1969-1973, and just FYI, during the same time period, Westfield’s “B” Squad team won 110 games, a streak that lasted over a decade and remains the longest in New Jersey history. This season the schedule will get much tougher with the addition of Phillipsburg, Piscataway and Old Bridge and getting a “4 peat” not to mention 12-0 will be much more difficult.
Athlete of the Year: Back in the day, everyone played 3 sports. Fall, Winter and Spring you were on a team. Now, it is becoming very rare. How about this, Stephen Dwyer of Immaculata not only played 3 sports but except when injured, he started every game in Football, Basketball and Lacrosse. He was the Captain of all three teams, won multiple awards, and was everything from all-area to all-state. In our view in this age of specialization and boys and girls picking a sport before high school and then living that sport morning, noon and night, Stephen is what a High School Athlete should be. Stephen Dwyer, The NJ Internet Radio’s 2017-18 Athlete of the year.
