Today in Westfield, New Jersey Internet Radio announced on it's long running weekly webcast The Jersey High School Sports Round Up that Bergen Catholic of Oradell is the 2017 #1 High School Football team in the NJ Internet Radio service area and has won The John Pepe Trophy. The show can be heard now by going to our archive page and just clicking. The rest of the Top 5 include DePaul (Wayne) was #2 followed by #3 North Hunterdon, #4 South Brunswick and #5 Westfield. Our Championship Trophy is named after the former Sport Director of WERA Radio in Plainfield John Pepe Sr.
From his Obit - A Plainfield High School graduate, John attended Wyoming Seminary Prep and later graduated from Penn State University. While attending college, John was participated in NCAA wrestling and was an Eastern Wrestling Champion and a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity . John was an avid sports fan and gifted athlete. He enjoyed college boxing, stock car racing, handball and golf and played semi pro football for 14 years. As a Physical Education teacher for the Plainfield High School, John also served as the school’s wrestling & golf coach. He later became the Superintendent of Recreation for the City of Plainfield and was the WERA Radio Sports Director and a familiar voice on air. He served as the State Recreation Commissioner and also served as the Union County Parks President. In addition, John was a member of many local civic organizations including, the Jr. Chamber of Commerce, Unico, Kiwanis, Flying Eagles the Maddolonesse Club and was a member of the Plainfield West Nine golf Course.
Coach Pepe was an early influence on New Jersey Internet Radio founder and owner Joe Nolan and Mr. Pepe's voice doing radio play by play of Union, Middlesex and Somerset County high school football games is one of the reason Mr. Nolan became interested in radio as a career. Mr. Nolan thought this would be a fitting honor.
Previous Winners include St. Joe's (Mont), Ridge, St. Peter's Prep, Westfield (2) and now Bergen Catholic.
