Jay's NO BULL Fishing Report
SEPTEMBER 27 2006
<< back to articles

Weakfish are finally biting. I have reports of the being picked up in the rip on jigs and peanut bunkers, the reach channel at buoy 6, 8 and further up also in the Sandy Hook Rip on the incoming. Some fish are up to 23". Look for them to stick around hopefully for another week or two and then be ready to say goodbye. Last year some guys had weakies in the deep holes on the Sandy Hook side of the Highlands bridge feeding on peanuts, all over 6 pounds. They were under the blues and bass!

Stripers are starting to provide some action also in the rip and on Flynn's Knoll. Schoolies are being picked up under the bridges on worms and eels. The bluefish are making themselves known under the bridges too. I have some reports of bunkers way up the Navesink with bass breaking on them at night. The bunkers schools are coming in all sizes lately. Just before sunrise is when they are most active.

After a long quiet night of chumming we got taken down by two of these guys on the troll. When Sam Choy Junior spotted seven frigates (possibly 8) circling above he knew it was our time. As he said," Billy, don't touch the drag, Billy," I knew we would be getting bit soon. Tim and I got ready and harnessed up. As Capt Curwin approached the action, our port side lures got blasted about 5 seconds apart. Tim's fish pulled hooks at the boat (Jobu's with 90 lbs of drag), and I was lucky enough to land mine with the teams help. Tim the hockey goalie now tackle owner on gaff, Capt Sam with broken wrist as wire man and the Mangler on controls; was enough to say this fish was going to market.  The lure, "Black Smoke," was a custom by Curwin rigged on 300 lb fluoro. The reel was a 80 Tiagra with 100 lb diamond and the rod a 80-130 stand up bent butt by Melton Tackle. A fifteen minute battle at 35 lbs of drag; this was my biggest yellowfin and tuna on stand up at 165lbs.
